Product Overview
The DeWalt DCA1820 18V to 20V MAX Adapter* is a problem-solving accessory that allows you to use modern DeWalt 20V MAX* Lithium-Ion batteries in most older 18V NiCad/NiMH tools. It essentially “upgrades” your vintage 18V tools to lithium-ion technology, extending their lifespan and improving performance without forcing you to buy a whole new toolset.

Key Features
Modern Battery Tech: Brings the benefits of Lithium-Ion (no memory effect, lighter weight, longer shelf life) to older 18V tools.
Cost Effective: Allows you to keep using your paid-for 18V tools while transitioning your battery collection to the modern 20V platform.
Easy Installation: Slides into the bottom of the 18V tool handle just like the old battery, and the 20V battery slides onto the bottom of the adapter.
Critical Limitations & Warnings (Read Carefully)
NO CHARGING: You CANNOT charge a 20V battery through this adapter using an old 18V charger. You must remove the 20V battery and charge it on a dedicated 20V charger.
Vampire Drain: The adapter contains circuitry that draws a small amount of power even when the tool is off. Always remove the battery from the adapter at the end of the day, or it will drain the battery completely and potentially ruin it.
Incompatible Tools: It does NOT work with 18V DeWalt Nailers, Radios, or Flashlights (specifically DC020 and DC022) due to voltage/contact differences.
Incompatible Batteries: It is NOT compatible with 20V/60V FLEXVOLT® batteries (they typically will not physically click in).
Specific Drills: DeWalt advises against using “Premium” (high capacity) batteries in the DC970 and DC759 drills with this adapter.

Common Use Cases
This is perfect for users who have a “mixed fleet” of tools—perhaps you have a trusty old 18V circular saw or reciprocating saw that still works great, but your 18V NiCad batteries are all dead. This adapter lets you power that old saw with the same batteries you use for your new 20V drill.
*Note: “20V MAX” refers to the maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload), which is 20 volts. Nominal voltage is 18 volts.
